How To Series: Breaking Down a Whole Chicken

Breaking down a whole chicken might seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually easier than you think.
All you need is a sharp knife, gloves, a large cutting board, and a nutritious whole chicken from Grass Roots Farmer’s Cooperative of course!
Watch Rob Potter as he carefully demonstrates how you can break down a whole bird at home.
There are several benefits to buying a whole chicken and breaking it down at home:
- Buying a whole chicken is more cost-effective than buying separate parts.
- When you purchase a whole chicken, your recipe options are endless! Think baked chicken breasts, wings, and more!
- Using parts that would normally be disposed, like chicken backs, to make chicken stock is a great idea. Bone stock is rich in minerals that help build and strengthen your bones. It also contains many other healthy nutrients, including vitamins, amino acids, and essential fatty acids
- A benefit all our grass fed, pastured chicken products have is that their meat is highly enriched in omega-3 fats. This is due to the pasture-based diet we provide our birds, which means more nutrients for you and your family
