The Real Cost of Cheap Food

The Real Cost of Cheap Food

Want to hear something wild? If a Snickers bar were the size of a 15 lb turkey, it would cost over $170! Now, I'm not too proud to admit that I do love the occasional Snickers bar, but I was floored.

This little factoid got me thinking about the real cost of food, especially at a time when food prices have shot up by 25% over the past four years and big food corporations are raking in record profits. So, let's chat about why our pasture-raised, ethically produced meat costs what it does, and why we believe it's worth every penny.

Here's the thing: when you buy Grass Roots meats, you're not just buying a meal. You're buying into a whole different world of farming.

Our pasture-raised turkeys roaming near the prairie schooners on our Arkansas farms.

Let me paint you a picture. On one side, you've got the industrial farm. Massive barns crammed with thousands of birds or cattle. Farmers paid a measly $0.06 per pound. Workers in processing plants struggling to make ends meet, being denied bathroom breaks (allegedly being forced to wear diapers).

On our side? You've got:

  • Lush pastures and our Prairie Schooners - those nifty mobile coops that shelter 200 birds and give them fresh pasture every single day.
  • Farmers earning over $1.00 per pound - that's 15 times more than the industrial model!
  • A tight-knit operation in the processing plant - we've partnered with that's focused on the well-being of the employees, ensuring they thrive, grow, and take advantage of career training.

Sure, this means our products cost more. But when you buy from us, you're not just getting a cut of meat, you're getting:

  • A healthier product - Packed with more nutrients and flavor than its factory-farmed cousins.
  • A cleaner environment - Our regenerative practices actually improve the land.
  • Happier farmers - Your purchase helps keep small family farms alive.
  • Stronger communities - We're creating good jobs in rural areas.

Yes, our meat costs more than what you might find in a typical grocery store, but we believe - and we hope you'll agree - that it's worth it. You're not just buying meat; you're investing in your health, supporting small farmers, promoting animal welfare, and contributing to a more regenerative and delicious food system

So the next time you sit down to a Grass Roots meal, remember you're not just eating dinner. You're voting for a better food system with every bite.

Speaking of voting, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Ditch the Snickers and make this year's feast truly special by pre-ordering your pasture-raised
Thanksgiving turkey today. Taste the difference that ethical, sustainable farming makes.
Trust me, your taste buds (and conscience) will thank you!

Thanks for being part of this journey with us. We couldn't do it without you.

        Your farmer,
        Cody
