Iโ€™ve been working with Heifer for almost 12 years, but most of that time was spent in New England. In early 2018, I was offered the opportunity to move to Arkansas and took it so I could work more closely with small-scale, sustainable farmers and be at the helm as the Ranch scales up production across our various agricultural enterprises.

Like many of you, weโ€™ve been watchingย  the environmental crisis unfold in Australia with a heavy heart.ย  The loss they are experiencing is unfathomable, wreaking havoc on everything from the ecological environment to homes and extensive wildlife loss. As a business founded on farming in a way that isย  sustainable and actually combats climate change, we felt compelled to give back. North Carolina is the center of Americaโ€™s pork industry, with overย 9.7 million pigs that produce 10 billion gallons of waste annually.ย When a pig in aย large-scale farmย urinates or defecates, the waste falls through slatted floors into holdingย troughsย below. Those troughs are periodically flushed into an earthen hole in the ground called a โ€œlagoonโ€โ€”which contain a mixture of water, pig excrement, pig carcasses and anaerobic bacteria. The bacteria digest the slurry and also give lagoons their pink coloration.
