From the Farm this Fall

From the Farm this Fall
Our pigs are on their daily move to fresh forage of autumn acorns, chestnuts and wild berries.

Three daily check-ins, 250 days straight, countless weather challenges - and you know what? We wouldn't have it any other way.

But as we send off our last flock of pastured chickens to the butcher and welcome those first freezing temperatures, my inner battery is flashing that red 10% warning signal. 🪫

Let me tell you - raising pastured chickens isn't your typical 9-to-5 gig. For nine straight months, these birds are our constant companions. Rain or shine, heat wave or storm, someone's out there checking on them at least three times daily. It's a beautiful dance with nature, but it's also all-consuming.

Checking in on our last flock of chickens for the season.

What makes it sustainable? Mother Nature's built-in vacation policy.

We only raise our chickens during the green season when the pastures are lush and growing. When winter rolls around and the grass takes its annual snooze, so do we (mostly). Time to catch our breath, take stock, and tackle those farm projects we've been eyeing all summer - that is, if we can peel ourselves off the couch.

And yes - perhaps discover what normal people call 'sleeping in' (though in farmer terms, that means 6am).

Ready for hibernation? Even Snake, one of our Livestock Guardian Dogs, knows the need for rest.

Before we slip into our winter rest though, there's one more celebration on the horizon - Thanksgiving. It's honestly one of my favorite days of the year. A chance to gather around a table, share in the harvest, and appreciate the rhythm of the seasons that got us here. 🍂

Want to make this Thanksgiving extra special? Our pasture-raised turkeys have been soaking up the autumn sunshine and are ready to be the centerpiece of your celebration. The final day to order is Tuesday, Nov 19 so don't wait.

Your (slightly sleepy) farmer,

Cody
