Smoky Bacon Pork & Beans

Smoky Bacon Pork & Beans

A backyard barbecue classic with a flavorful twist! Smoky bacon, sweet brown sugar, and tender onions transform canned pork & beans into an easy side dish that's perfect alongside burgers, hot dogs, ribs, or anything coming off the grill.

Ingredients

Medium Yellow Onion, diced
½
Van Camp's Pork & Beans
1 (28–31 oz) can
Yellow Mustard
1 tsp
Brown Sugar
1 tbsp
Salt, to taste

Utensils

  • Cast Iron Skillet

Instructions

Grill Method

  1. Preheat your grill to medium heat (about 350–400°F).
  2. Place a cast iron skillet or grill-safe pan on the grates and cook the chopped bacon until it begins to crisp.
  3. Add the diced onion and cook until softened and translucent.
  4. Carefully remove most of the excess bacon grease, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan for flavor.
  5. Stir in:
    • 1 can (28–31 oz) Van Camp's Pork & Beans
    • 1 tsp yellow mustard
    • 1 tbsp brown sugar
    • Salt, to taste
  6. Close the grill lid and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the beans are hot and slightly bubbling.

Optional Grilling Tip

For even more barbecue flavor, add a little bit of sharp cheddar on top and move the skillet to indirect heat after everything is combined and let the beans cook for 20–30 minutes with the lid closed. The extra time allows the beans to thicken slightly and pick up a subtle smoky flavor from the grill.

This version pairs especially well with grilled burgers, hot dogs, smoked chicken, pulled pork, or ribs, making it a great side dish for any backyard barbecue.

Stovetop Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until it begins to crisp.
  2. Add the diced onion and continue cooking until the onion is soft and translucent and the bacon is fully cooked.
  3. Carefully remove most of the excess bacon grease with a paper towel, leaving a small amount in the pan for flavor.
  4. Stir in the can of pork & beans, mustard, and brown sugar. Season with salt to taste.
  5. Simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is heated through and the flavors have combined.
  6. Serve warm alongside your favorite grilled meats.
